Weekend in Review: Kickoff classic results from around the area

By Matt Porter

It was a busy weekend for everyone, so take a few moments to dig in to this high school football stew, for lack of a better phrase.

We may or may not compile a list like this during the regular season, for two reasons: One, we have more writers on the road at games. Secondly, schools are much, much better about reporting games that count in the standings. We won’t have to chase as many scores.

Since we cannot cover every game in the area, we rely on schools to send us results. Unfortunately, we are still missing the following games: Village Academy-Spanish River; King’s Academy-Gulliver Prep; Pope John-Mater Academy; Royal Palm Beach-Nova. If you are a fan of one of those teams, please remind your team’s coaching staff or athletic department to call in results after every game by calling 561-820-4440, or fax the results to 561-820-4441. You can also email game results to pbsports@pbpost.com. We aim to have every score and many results in the paper, and more detailed results online. Please help us achieve that goal.

Here are the results of this year’s kickoff classic games (and the two games that counted in the standings, wins by Glades Central and Glades Day).

If you’re so inclined, you can compare our pregame predictions to the actual results and see who’s more of a dope. (Hello, Cardinal Newman. You made me look great.)

Dwyer 25, Carol City 20: Dwyer is a little concerned about its depth. Click here for the story and five talking points from the game.

Glades Day 24, Twiggs County (Ga.) 12: Kelvin Taylor is back. Get the game story by clicking here and postgame thoughts from the stadium.

Glades Central 6, Dallas-Skyline 0: Raiders do it with defense in Daytona. How about a game story, or some postgame thoughts?

Suncoast 34, John Carroll 28 (OT): FHSAA is investigating a fight between the teams. Click here for more.

Miami-Booker T. Washington 35, Atlantic 22: The Eagles struggle on special teams and in the trenches. Also, the Eagles lack a leadership presence in the locker room, says their coach.

Seminole Ridge 36, West Boca 23: Back-and-forth game that was won by the Hawks’ four-back attack. Click here for the game story and here for some day-after thoughts.

Park Vista 27, Santaluces 13: Tre Mason’s three touchdowns lift the Cobras. Click here for the story.

Treasure Coast 14, Gainesville-Buchholz 7 (OT): Titans’ defense is still strong. Click here for a report.

John I. Leonard 21, Palm Beach Gardens 14: The Gators lost the first game in The Swamp. Click here for a report.

Boca Raton 21, Hollywood Hills 17: Bobcats sophomore quarterback Kevin Anderson threw two first-half touchdown passes, but Boca gave up two long TD pass plays. Click here for a report.

Here are the results that appeared in our Friday night roundup:

Cardinal Newman 21, Boynton Beach 0: Devonte Brown rushed for two touchdowns, and Troy Campana added a 65-yard TD run, as the Crusaders defeated the host Tigers.
Newman’s defense forced six Boynton turnovers.

Suncoast 34, John Carroll 28 (OT): James Huggins scored on a 10-yard run to lift the Chargers over the host Rams in a penalty-filled game in Fort Pierce.
Huggins had 18 carries for 151 yards, and John Carroll’s Jonathan Poma had 141 yards on 26 carries.
The game was marred by numerous penalties and a fight late in the third quarter resulted in several ejections.

Fort Pierce Westwood 21, Port St. Lucie 14: Wonderful Terry scored two touchdowns and Cameron Toombs rushed for 127 yards on 13 carries as the Panthers topped the Jaguars at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce.

Olympic Heights 31, Lake Worth 22: Javon Jenkins rushed for 108 yards and a TD to lead the Lions past the Trojans in Boca Raton.

Wellington 14, Jupiter 8: Amir Pollock had a 65-yard TD run and Tyler Vanacore added a 35-yard TD run to lead the Wolverines past the Warriors in Wellington.

Martin County 30, Benjamin 10: Eduardo Sandoval kicked three field goals, three extra points and recovered a fumble for a safety as the Tigers topped the host Buccaneers in Palm Beach Gardens.

Sebastian River 50, Berean Christian 6: Keion Berry returned a kickoff 86 yards for a TD in the Bulldogs’ loss to the host Sharks.

Boca Raton Christian 6, Sheridan Hills Christian 0: Stephen Smith had six carries for 111 yards, including a 78-yard TD run, in the host Blazers’ win.
The game was called in the middle of the third quarter when Boca Christian lost too many players to injury to continue.

Miami-Belen Jesuit 29, American Heritage 21: Herve Coby had seven catches for 89 yards and a TD for the Stallions, who fell to the Wolverines in Miami.
