Glades Central QB Jamarious Rowley to switch positions next week

By Jeff Greer

With an eye on his college recruitment, Glades Central quarterback Jamarious Rowley approached coach Jessie Hester with an idea.

Rowley offered to take a break from quarterbacking the Raiders and move to linebacker for one game. He wants to add some senior-year footage of him playing his projected college position to his highlight reel. Plus, he added, it’d be good for his backup to get some first-string reps at quarterback.

So, when Glades Central travels to Clewiston on Oct. 1, look for Rowley on the defensive side of the ball.

“I just decided to play [linebacker],” Rowley said via text message on Monday night. “I think my backup can handle it.”

Glades Central coach Jessie Hester wasn’t opposed to the idea, saying Rowley probably won’t get the chance to play quarterback in college, so he needed to “satisfy some scouts who have some curiosity about him” at linebacker.

Plus, it won’t be too hard: Rowley was an all-state linebacker as a junior.

As for backup quarterback Greg Davis getting reps with the first team, that’s not as cut and dry.

Hester isn’t sure if Davis will be ready to play by Oct. 1.  The junior suffered a severe high ankle sprain back on Sept. 11 when Glades Central beat Denison (Texas) in DeSoto, Texas.

“If we had to play today, (Davis) wouldn’t be able to go,” Hester said.

For the time being, junior receiver Jems Richemond is slated to start in Rowley’s place at quarterback in two weeks. Hester said Richemond is an athletic kid who can handle the job.

Nonetheless, it’s not often that a quarterback offers to take a week off, especially one at Glades Central. But if Rowley wants to, Hester says he has no problem with it.

“This is a wise decision for him,” Hester said. “He’s covering his bases.”
