St. Andrew’s hires lacrosse legend Casey Powell to lead program

By Matt Porter

If you are part of the lacrosse world, there’s a great chance you know the name Casey Powell.

Widely considered one of the best American lacrosse players, Powell has signed on to become the head of lacrosse at St.
Andrew’s School in Boca Raton.

“St. Andrew’s is a national powerhouse and it’s in a beautiful spot,” Powell said. “I’m coming in to help maintain the success they’ve had down there.”

Powell, 34, is a three-time first-team NCAA All-American (Syracuse), a former U.S. Men’s National Team captain (2006) and the leading scorer in Major League Lacrosse history (383 points). He is the eldest of three brothers (Mike, Ryan) collectively known as the first family of American lacrosse.

Powell takes the reins from former coach Jeff Goldberg, with whom the school parted ways in August. He will concentrate on player development while assisting interim boys coach R.J. Dawson.

Under Goldberg, the Scots won eight consecutive state titles, and 14 of the last 16. Powell, who called the Scots “the best team in the Southeast” at the high school level, said he wants to keep St. Andrew’s at forefront of the national scene.

“It is a national powerhouse,” said Powell. “I’m going to use all my experience and resources to be sure they continue that success. I want to help both the boys and girls use lacrosse as a springboard to get to college.

“Lacrosse has changed my life. This is a chance to use my success to give back.”

Powell, who was an assistant coach last season at Division III power Cortland State and runs Casey Powell Lacrosse camps, did not rule out coaching at St. Andrew’s down the road.

Starting Nov. 1, Powell will be at St. Andrew’s. He also runs lacrosse camps (Casey Powell Lacrosse) and plays professionally. He was the 2010 National League Lacrosse MVP as a member of the Orlando Titans.

When the Titans folded in August, he was drafted by the NLL’s Boston Blazers. He will travel with the Blazers on weekends during the NLL season, which runs from January to April.

Powell has spent the last 12 years on the road, playing and teaching — “I’m like a vagabond journeyman,” he said — but he isn’t new to South Florida.

During spring break at Syracuse, he said, his team would travel to St. Andrew’s to play tournaments. When he heard the school was looking for a new lacrosse director, he said he told his agent to call.

“I think lacrosse is a sleeping giant in Florida,” Powell said. “That’s one of the reasons I wanted to come down here and be a part of the scene. The growth in the last 10 years is pretty overwhelming.”

The lacrosse world is relatively small, and good news travels fast.

“It is a small world,” Powell said. “I just signed the deal today, and I’ve already got about 50 messages from people in the lacrosse world congratulating me.”
