Fort Pierce Central’s Giorgio Newberry commits to Florida State

By Jeff Greer

Fort Pierce Central defensive end Giorgio Newberry verbally committed to Florida State on Sunday.

He joins a 2011 class that also features fellow area stars Lamarcus Brutus and Keelin Smith, who are both seniors at Treasure Coast.

Newberry and some of his teammates attended FSU’s 31-0 win over Wake Forest in Tallahassee on Saturday. Rivals.com reported that Newberry (6-5, 260, No. 5 on the PBGametime Big Board) called FSU coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday with his decision.

The senior can play both ways, lining up at offensive tackle and defensive end at Fort Pierce Central. His recruitment became a national story after Florida abruptly stopped recruiting him because Newberry missed the Gators’ Friday Night Lights prospects event over the summer.

In August, Newberry said he hadn’t decided whether he wanted to play offense or defense. Either way, FSU will happily use his massive frame.
