How they’re ranked: National and statewide all-classification polls update for week of Oct. 8

By Matt Porter

We added three national polls — ESPN Rise, USA Today and RivalsHigh — to our usual roundup and analysis of the Beef O’Brady’s and Associated Press statewide rankings. Here’s how the scene looks this week:

Nationwide polls: Dwyer (4-1) is No. 17 in the ESPN RISE Fab 50 nationwide rankings. Among Florida teams, Manatee (2nd) and St. Thomas Aquinas (9th) outrank Dwyer on the list. Glades Central (6-0) is No. 41 on the list, behind fellow Class 2A power Cocoa (24th), Miami Central (30th), Dr. Phillips (37th) and Miami Northwestern (39th). Jefferson (46th) and Armwood (47th) are the other Florida teams on ESPN’s top 50.

Glades Central is No. 20 in the USA Today Top 25 high school poll. The other Florida teams on the list: Manatee (5), St. Thomas Aquinas (6), Cocoa (14) and Miami Central (22). Dwyer is not ranked.

Dwyer is No. 19 in the RivalsHigh Top 100, the same as last week (Dwyer fans will note that Cleveland-Glenville is 17th in the poll. It is 4th in the ESPN RISE ranks, and 11th in the USA Today Top 25). Glades Central jumps 10 spots, from No. 72 to No. 62, after its 40-7 win over Boca Raton.

Statewide polls: Glades Central is knocking on the door of the top 10 in the Beef O’Brady’s all-classification poll (see poll below), inching a spot to No. 11. Dwyer holds at No. 5, but expect that to change if Dwyer either wins or loses big this week against high-profile Park Vista.

Here’s the breakdown of this week’s Associated Press statewide classification polls.

Class 6A: Seminole Ridge and Park Vista are on the outside of the 6A top 10. The 10th-ranked team, Miramar, has two losses, so there could be room for Seminole Ridge or Park Vista if either wins this week. Nothing could be stronger for Park Vista’s case than a win over Dwyer.

Class 5A: No teams ranked.

Class 4A: Dwyer stays where they are — No. 2 — but Fort Pierce Central crashes the party at No. 10. A win this week over a tough Treasure Coast club could move the Cobras up a spot.

Class 3A: Fort Pierce Westwood stays at No. 6 in the 3A ranks. Will both Central and Westwood be undefeated heading into their Nov. 12 season finale?

Class 2A: Glades Central holds its No. 2 spot in the 2A top five. Anyone else going to be very surprised if Glades Central and Cocoa do not meet sometime down the road?

Class 2B: With a loss to Ft. Lauderdale-University, the No. 4 team in Class 2B ranks, Cardinal Newman drops out of the top 5. Newman received 18 votes this week, and a bye week won’t help the Crusaders stay fresh in the minds of the voters.

Class 1A: I’m not sure why American Heritage didn’t crack the 1A top five after a 50-20 win over Pahokee. Though statewide voters have caught onto the fact that the Blue Devils are down this year, hanging a half-century on a well-known — and still talented — opponent should have made more of a statement. The Stallions received 13 votes, and this week’s opponent, King’s Academy, garnered 7. Have to think one of them sneaks into the top five next week (depending on what the other teams do, of course).

Class 1B: Jeff and I didn’t penalize Jupiter Christian too much for a loss to Clermont-East Ridge, a very good 6A school. But the Eagles fell from first to third in the 1B top five, as voters couldn’t ignore unbeatens Warner Christian and Victory Christian. Two lopsided wins in the last two weeks were probably pushed Glades Day back into the 1B top five. Can’t wait to see how they fare this week against an outstanding Miami Belen Jesuit Prep squad (No. 8 in 3A top 10).
