Boys basketball: Atlantic, John I. Leonard, Lake Worth Christian to play in Kreul Classic

By Matt Porter

Three teams from Palm Beach County — Atlantic, John I. Leonard and Lake Worth Christian — are part of a 32-team field that will compete at the 21st Kreul Classic boys basketball holiday tournament.

The tournament will be held Dec. 17-22 at Coral Springs City Gymnasium in Coral Springs.

“One of our founding goals was to attract quality programs from across the nation to compete against our local teams,” Kreul President Jim Reilly said in a press release. “This relieves our local coaches of the tremendous burden of raising funds to travel elsewhere to gain exposure for their players and to other styles of play. Given the economic times we are facing, it is likely that our mission resonates louder today than it did 21 years ago when we started the tournament.”

Nineteen of the 32 teams are from South Florida. Teams will compete in three separate brackets, with bracket finals played on Tues., Dec. 21. The tournament schedule and pairings will be announced in November.

Proceeds from the tournament fund the charitable organization’s academic scholarship program. According to the press release, the Kreul organization, a non-profit 501(c)3, has awarded more than $500,000 in academic scholarships to Florida students.
