Inside the polls: Dwyer back on top, Glades Central slipping

By Matt Porter

Dwyer was our preseason No. 1, and fell a bit after its loss to Cleveland-Glenville. Since then, the Panthers have been a bone of contention between Jeff and I. They’ve looked like a No. 1, acted like a No. 1, played like a No. 1.

But Glades Central hadn’t lost yet. How were we to drop them from the top spot?

Before we could wring our hands any more, the Raiders fell short against Ft. Lauderdale-Dillard. A close loss to a good team, but Dillard isn’t exactly the best Broward County has to offer. Meanwhile, Dwyer annihilated Park Vista — shorthanded yes, but still a powerful team — and showed why it deserves the top spot in our rankings. The Panthers are large, well coached, and have no glaring weaknesses. Aside from a few too many penalty yards, they’re playing as well as can be. After the Ohio Incident, they said they wanted to stomp everyone in their path on their way to a state title. Let’s see how long they keep it going.

Here is The Palm Beach Post/PBGametime Football Top 10 (I think that’s the official name, anyway) for the week of Oct. 16:

1. Dwyer
2. Glades Central
3. Seminole Ridge
4. Fort Pierce Westwood
5. American Heritage
6. Jupiter Christian
7. Atlantic
8. Fort Pierce Central
9. Cardinal Newman
10. Park Vista

(A reminder that you can see the poll, along with all the statistical leaders, by visiting our football main page. Click here, good sir/madam.)

A Ft. Lauderdale newspaper put Seminole Ridge ahead of Glades Central in its rankings, but we just don’t see it. Granted, it would be a very good game, but the Raiders have more talent and would win, so they’re No. 2 in our poll. If Ridge plants a beating on Atlantic this week and Glades Central stumbles again, the order will likely change next week. It’ll be interesting to see how Glades Central fares without Kelvin Benjamin, who plays his last high school game this week at Boynton Beach.

Now, if Atlantic beats Seminole Ridge this week, things will get really interesting. For now, the Eagles are No. 7, behind Fort Pierce Westwood (idle this week), American Heritage (probable District 7-1A champs after its win over King’s Academy) and Jupiter Christian (who can’t lose focus with an easy schedule down the stretch).

Park Vista slips to No. 10 in the rankings. This is still a good team, even without Cody Preble and Tim Haynes. They’re not on Dwyer’s level — no one in the area is — but gut feeling says the Cobras could handle the rest of the outsiders — Glades Day, Olympic Heights, Jensen Beach, Martin County, Lake Worth and King’s Academy.

National: Glades Central dropped out of the ESPN RISE Fab 50 poll. The Raiders were ranked No. 41 last week. They also dropped out of the RivalsHigh Top 100, from a No. 62 ranking. They also dropped out of the USA Today Super 25 rankings, from No. 20.

In the ESPN RISE Fab 50, Dwyer holds at No. 17 after its 52-7 win over Park Vista. … Dwyer moves up from No. 19 to No. 14 in the RivalsHigh Top 100.

Statewide: Glades Central dropped from No. 2 to No. 5 in the Associated Press poll (see results below)… Dwyer received three first-place votes in 4A, but remain at No. 2 behind Armwood. Also in 4A, Fort Pierce Central moves up from No. 10 to No. 7 … Seminole Ridge snuck into the 6A rankings at No. 10 … Fort Pierce Westwood holds at No. 6 in the 3A rankings … Cardinal Newman remains on the outside of the 2B top five … American Heritage didn’t crack the 1A top five … In 1B, Jupiter Christian had a first-place vote, but remains at No. 3. Glades Day received plenty of votes, but stayed on the outside.

UPDATE (6:02 p.m.): In the Beef O’Brady’s statewide Top 25, Dwyer held at No. 5, while Glades Central dropped from No. 11 to No. 22 (see results below).
