A rash of injuries hits Glades Day: QB Tanner Redish out for season

By Jeff Greer

Doctors told Glades Day quarterback Tanner Redish (broken left collarbone) on Monday that he will need two months to recover from the injury he suffered Friday night against King’s Academy. Meanwhile, two-way star J.T. Thornton told the Post‘s Matt Porter last week that he’d miss four weeks with a broken left leg.

All this in the middle of Glades Day’s hunt for a playoff spot out of District 7-1B. The Gators play Deerfield-Zion Lutheran on Friday. It’s a simple concept for Glades Day: Win and it’s in. But with two stars missing, there’s an added element of drama.

“When Tanner came out against King’s, we knew it’d be tough,” Glades Day coach Pete Walker said on Tuesday. “Now we need the rest of our guys to step into the gaps and step up.”

Walker used backup QB John Barr for the remainder of Glades Day’s 42-21 loss at King’s. Barr was 3 of 6 for 73 yards and a touchdown in relief.

“He knows what he’s doing and he’ll do what we ask of him,” Walker said. “He’s ready.”

Another option that might mix it up a bit for the Gators is defensive back/receiver Eaton Spence. Walker said he’s planned on using Spence as the quarterback in a Wildcat formation for some time, and may unleash it this week.

Spence is an explosive athlete with scholarship offers from Illinois, Marshall and a few other Division I programs.

“He can spice it up a bit,” Walker said.

The Gators will need some spice to get into the playoffs, but they should be able to get by a Zion Lutheran team that has lost four in a row by an average margin of 44.5 points. Then they’ll have an open week to get healthy before the playoffs, provided they take care of business against Zion Lutheran.
