One by one, Glades Central seniors take a run at Kelvin Benjamin in this video from Oct. 20. It was Benjamin’s last full-contact high school football practice, so Benjamin stood in the middle and let his teammates get their last licks in.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Benjamin takes hits from 275-pound tackle Marcus Clentscale, 165-pound wideout Jaqavein Oliver and everyone in between in a show of football solidarity.
“We tried to keep the practice all live and fun for the guys,” Benjamin said afterward. “A couple of cats on the team are sad that I’m leaving and stuff like that, so I’ve got to let them know to keep their confidence up. They can keep going. They don’t need me.”
“We had some fun,” Glades Central coach Jessie Hester said. “It was his last go-round with the seniors, and since we’re cutting it short with him, he had to get it from the rest of the guys.”
“It’s too bad he couldn’t go the full ride with us, but it was fun while it lasted,” Hester said.
Benjamin said the gauntlet was an assistant coach’s idea.
“We had to finish out strong,” he said. “Let all the seniors get a lick on me. It was real fun. I like that. I took like 25 hits.”
One of the top wide receivers in the state, Benjamin became ineligible after Week 8 because he passed the FHSAA’s age limit of 19 years, 9 months.
Benjamin will put on pads next in the Dec. 31 Offense-Defense Bowl in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“Wow, is this a great addition to our game,” Offense-Defense Sports Director Artie Gigantino said. “Christian Lemay and our East QB’s will love throwing to Kelvin. He is big, strong and fast. He is one of the most talented players we have in the game. Needless to say, we are extremely happy this highly rated receiver will be in our game.”

Benjamin has not decided on a college as of yet.
That day, Benjamin said his top three college choices were “all the Florida schools” — Florida, Florida State and Miami — and “then Alabama, LSU, West Virginia and Marshall.”
