J’Rod, a senior wide receiver at Atlantic, picked up a scholarship offer Wednesday night after a visit from Eastern Illinois.

“It’s my first offer. I’m just very excited,” Beard said. “I can’t wait to see the place.”

“My brother told me just be patient, somebody’s going to offer you, keep your head up. And it just so happens to be his school to offer.”

Nick Beard is a redshirt freshman safety who played in all 11 games this season, recording 38 tackles and two pass breakups for the Panthers (2-9).

Eastern Illinois’ roster also includes Glades Central alums Tavares Crawford and Artavious Dowdell, Palm Beach Gardens grads Jimmy Lera and Randolph Tribble, and former American Heritage running back Jake Walker.

Several area seniors hold scholarship offers from the school, including Jupiter Christian running back Trey Pendergrass. Eastern Illinois coaches were at Dwyer and several other schools Wednesday.

While Beard says he remains uncommitted, he likes what he hears from Eastern Illinois.

“[The coaches] told me I’ll fit in good in their offense,” Beard said.
