We’re live at Tampa’s Robinson High School for the Class 2A semifinal between Glades Central and Robinson. It’s a rematch of last year’s state semifinal, which Glades Central won 33-0 in Belle Glade. Here are a few quick hitters from pregame warmups …
“Healthiest we’ve ever been? Glades Central coach Jessie Hester said before the game that his team was the healthiest it’s been all season. Junior linebacker Jatavis Brown (ankle) practiced all week on his Grade 1 sprain and will play with no limitations. He looked fine in warmups. Junior lineman/kicker Josh Knabb (knee) is out.
Embracing the cold Hester also said this was the coldest it’s been for a Raiders’ game this year. Weather.com reported that it was 55 degrees 15 minutes before kickoff, with winds blowing northwest at 6 mph. Temperatures should dive to about 50 by the fourth quarter.
To deal with the cold, Hester instructed his players to wear tight underclothing. Most of the players had some kind of thermal wear on, but no loose clothing.
“That stuff slows you down,” Hester said.
Robinson’s speed The key to tonight’s game will be speed. As in, which team’s speed will stand out? Speed demon J.J. Hubbard (5-8, 160) has 27 touchdowns this season and ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-7 win over Tampa-Jesuit. His running against Glades Central’s speedy, hard-hitting linebackers and defensive linemen will be the biggest matchup of the night.
Cold … chicken? There was a nerve-trembling moment earlier today when Glades Central stopped for its lunch. The chicken was undercooked. Luckily, it was caught before anybody ate it. We think.
Ba(n)d omen? Glades Central chartered buses for its team and staff. The two buses with the team and coaches made it just fine, but the band bus broke down somewhere near LaBelle. Chatter from the sideline estimated that the band would arrive at Robinson around halftime.
