Battle for D-Block: Dwyer’s opponent, Armwood, claims the name

By Matt Porter

Gotta love nicknames. And there’s no shortage of good ones in our high school football scene.

Out in the Glades you have Jet, Treetop and Super Mario. Park Vista hands the ball to ‘Showtime.’ Suncoast has ‘Big Baby’ and ‘Wild Out’ on its roster. That’s just to name a few.

Dwyer calls itself ‘D-Block.’ So plenty of folks will be surprised to learn that Friday’s state semifinal opponent, claims that name, too:

SEFFNER – In 2003, when the Armwood High football team was on its way to the first of two state titles and consecutive undefeated seasons, the Hawks’ swarming defense earned a unique nickname — “D Block.”

Armwood had a reputation for locking down opposing offenses like a maximum-security prison.

As the undefeated Hawks (13-0) enter Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal showdown at home against Palm Beach Lakes Dwyer (12-1), the D Block tradition lives on.

The Panthers now have to defend their state title and their nickname. Bet that article is in every stall in Dwyer’s locker room before today’s practice.
