After talking to Will Muschamp, Kelvin Benjamin delays decision

By Jeff Greer

Talk about a first impression. After talking to new Florida coach Will Muschamp on Monday, Glades Central wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin has decided to delay picking a college until mid-January at the earliest.

Benjamin had originally planned to announce his choice on Thursday at the Glades Central gymnasium.

The senior receiver said he will take three official visits in January to each of the state’s big three football  universities — Florida, Florida State and Miami — and decide after he gets a better feel for each school.

Benjamin (6-6, 220, No. 2 on the PBGametime Recruiting Big Board) spoke with Glades Central coach Jessie Hester on Monday. Hester expressed his desire for Benjamin to delay his decision until Feb. 2, 2011 — the first day prospects can officially sign letters of intent with schools — so that he can sign at a ceremony with his other college-bound teammates. The coach also wanted Benjamin to be absolutely sure of his choice.

Had Benjamin announced Thursday, Hester indicated that his prized receiver would have committed to Florida State.

“That’s what I’m assuming given the coaching changes at the other schools,” Hester said late Monday night.

Benjamin said he’d only heard from Muschamp on Monday, not Miami’s newly minted coach Al Golden. Hester had hoped to hear from Golden on Monday but didn’t, although he expected to soon.

“I just want to make the right pick,” Benjamin said.
