Jupiter Christian’s Trey Pendergrass is the Class 1B Player of the Year, making him a finalist for Florida’s Mr. Football award.
Pendergrass rushed for 2,147 yards on 203 carries, caught 15 passes for 251 yards and accounted for 34 touchdowns. On defense, he had 42 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defensed, helping the Eagles (10-2) to the Class 1B regional finals.
If Pendergrass were to win, he would join Dwyer’s Matt Elam (2009) and Pahokee legends Anquan Boldin (1998) and Antone Smith (2004) as the only area players to win the award, given annually since 1992.
“We weren’t able to win a state title, which was one of the things I most wanted accomplish this season,” Pendergrass said. “[But] it’s an honor because I grew up watching all those guys play and idolized them. To be honored as a finalist for an award they’ve won is amazing.”
The 5-foot-7, 160-pound Pendergrass (No. 12 on the Big Board) has a 3.6 GPA and an offer from Eastern Illinois. He said he will take an official visit to Eastern Illinois on Jan. 15.
Pendergrass will suit up for the South squad in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star game on Dec. 22 in Sebring. Pendergrass also said he’ll play lacrosse for the Eagles this spring.
Dwyer’s Jacoby Brissett, runner-up for Class 4A Player of the Year, was the only area player who finished in the top three for his classification. Brissett, who completed 152 of 239 passes for 2,473 yards, 32 touchdowns and one interception, was also named Palm Beach County Player of the Year at the Lou Groza Awards ceremony last week. He led the Panthers to the Class 4A state semifinal.
Glades Day coach Pete Walker was a runner-up in a very close Class 1B Coach of the Year race. His Gators were the only Palm Beach County team to win a state title.
Three area coaches finished in third in their classification’s Coach of the Year voting: Seminole Ridge’s Matt Dickmann (Class 6A), Glades Central’s Jessie Hester (2A) and American Heritage’s Doug Socha (1A).
Last year, Dwyer’s Matt Elam won the statewide Mr. Football award, and Glades Day’s Kelvin Taylor, then a freshman, was eighth in the statewide voting. Both were Player of the Year in their respective classifications. Jupiter Christian’s Will Powers, Glades Central’s Greg Dent, American Heritage’s Darius Millines and Treasure Coast’s Jeff Luc finished among the top three in their classifications last year.
Hester, Walker, Dwyer’s Jack Daniels and American Heritage’s Willie Bueno finished among the top three in their classification’s Coach of the Year voting last season.
Below are the finalists and runners-up for the Mr. Football and Coach of the Year awards (note: all stats via Mr. Football award committee). At the bottom of the post, check out the full list of past winners.
