New Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp is wasting no time identifying his top targets.

As part of a statewide tour Wednesday, he visited Palm Beach Gardens coach Chris Davis to talk about junior offensive lineman Avery Young.

Muschamp told Davis that Young is the No. 1 player on the Gators’ list for next season. He also said the Gators want three offensive lineman from next year’s class.

Young, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound left tackle, is one of the top prospects in the 2012 national recruiting class. Muschamp wanted to remind Davis that as soon as the Gators can offer Young a scholarship — Sept. 1 — they will.

“He wanted to wanted to make sure that I know that Avery’s offered,” Davis said,

Muschamp, who visited with linebackers/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and secondary coach Travaris Robinson, spoke highly about offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and offensive line coach Frank Verducci, who he named to the positions Monday. Davis said he was told both Weis and Verducci would visit later this month.

Davis was most impressed by Muschamp’s personality — “he has that it factor you want in the head coach at the University of Florida,” he said — and knowledge of his new institution.

“He literally sounded like an orientation leader with what he was able to tell me about the school. He wasn’t here more than 15 minutes, but he told me more about the school than anyone,” said Davis, who sent 10 players to UF as coach at Lakeland and Fort Meade.

North Carolina State defensive coordinator Mike Archer also met with Davis on Wednesday. Young’s brother, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Willie Young Jr., played at N.C. State.

Alabama has also shown interest in Young. Tight ends coach Bobby Williams recently visited, saying “[Nick] Saban would be by a little later in the recruiting period,” Davis said.

Later that day, Muschamp planned to visit Dwyer senior defensive end Curt Maggitt, Dwyer coach Jack Daniels confirmed.

Dwyer senior quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who is on Muschamp’s radar, is currently in San Antonio, practicing for Saturday’s Under-Armour All-American Game (noon, NBC).

Glades Central wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, a target of Florida, Florida State and Miami, said via text message that he was not meeting with Muschamp today.
