Santonio Holmes brings attention to the Glades from New York City

By Jeff Greer

A story in Newsday, Long Island’s daily newspaper, delves into the meaning behind the tattoos on the hands of Glades Central great Santonio Holmes, who is now the star receiver for the New York Jets.

Of course they have everything to do with The Muck.

Holmes offers a few solid quotes about Belle Glade and his life now, which has led him on a rollercoaster from Ohio State to the Super Bowl-winning Pittsburgh Steelers and now the Jets, who are considered a Super Bowl contender in this year’s NFL playoffs. The uber-talented receiver sat out the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, but he’s regained his status as one of the best offensive weapons in the league since his return.

Of his tattoos, which say “Muck” and “City” in the middle of drawings of bricks, Holmes says: “The symbol of the bricks is just the hard work. And the way the words are placed inside of that, it’s almost like it can’t be broken based on what I witnessed, everything I’ve been a part of throughout the streets of Belle Glade. It’s all in between these bricks.”

He also said, “I represent Belle Glade, but at the same time, I’ve got to take care of myself because I don’t want to go back there. Regardless of how much I love it, I represent it and I talk about it, I ain’t going back there.”

Holmes caught 52 passes for 746 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games this season. Based on his averages, in a full 16-game season, Holmes would’ve had 69 catches for 995 yards and nine touchdowns. He and the Jets take on the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday in the NFL Wild Card round. Kickoff’s at 8 p.m.
