Dwyer’s Curt Maggitt set to announce college decision Feb. 3

By Matt Porter

Dwyer defensive end Curt Maggitt, one of the area’s most sought-after seniors, will go on TV to announce his college choice after all.

Maggitt, the No. 5 prospect on the PBGametime Big Board, will announce his college choice on the Sportsman Channel’s “Respect Outdoors” program at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 — the day after signing day.

The television special is the idea of Maggitt family friend Robert Arrington, the host of “Respect Outdoors” and a former Dwyer High baseball player. Maggitt planned to announce on a TV special Dec. 26, but decided to wait.

Maggitt, named a U.S. Air Force All-American, has scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, Iowa State, LSU, Miami, Tennessee and Wisconsin. He recently said his top three schools are Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Last week, Florida coach Will Muschamp visited with Maggitt, but the blue-chipper has not gone to Gainesville for an official visit. He visited Wisconsin, along with teammates Jacoby Brissett and Nick O’Leary, for the Badgers’ thrilling Oct. 16 win over Ohio State. He is scheduled for an official visit to Tennessee this weekend.

Of in-state schools, Miami is making a hard push for Maggitt, Brissett and O’Leary. Florida State has not made Maggitt an offer. “Nothing there,” Dwyer coach Jack Daniels said in regard to the Noles’ interest in Maggitt.

Maggitt, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound defensive end, fought through double-teams for 65 solo tackles and 17 sacks in 2010. He helped Dwyer hold opponents to less than a touchdown per game and was named The Post’s All-Area Large Schools Defensive Player of the Year.
