Seeing red: Texas high school unveils red turf at football stadium

By Matt Porter

Channeling their inner Boise State, a Texas high school team has made quite a statement with its home playing surface.

New Braunfels (Texas) Canyon High unveiled a retina-burning change to their surroundings — an all-red field turf surface at their stadium. The Cougars introduced the field with a soccer scrimmage Tuesday, and plan to play football games on it this fall.

And by the way: It’s real, real red.

What if the Cougars' uniforms were red? Would we be able to see them?

Everyone knows about Boise State — you either love or hate their infamous playing surface — but this red is a new thing entirely. By all accounts, it’s the first red high school field in the country. Eastern Washington, a Division 1-AA school, installed a red turf field for the 2010 season and plans to continue using it. The University of San Antonio was rumored to be toying with a bright orange field, but the school would neither confirm nor deny that being a possibility.

What do you think: is this the worst idea ever, or the best idea ever? And which Palm Beach County team would you like to see get a brightly colored field?

Personally, I’d like to see what a yellow-and-purple, tiger-striped Boynton Beach field would look like.

Or Spanish River, with a blue ocean (I’d put a swimming shark at midfield). Pahokee could rock the blue, too. Same with Royal Palm, but the Wildcats’ teal might give their field a “mint chocolate chip” look (possible sponsorship deal with Baskin-Robbins … )

How about Benjamin? Orange crush. John I. Leonard could go orange too, but Leonard could go jet-black. Same goes for Park Vista, which would look cool with an all-black Cobra pit …
