Dwyer wide receiver Tommylee Lewis commits to Northern Illinois

By Matt Porter

They talked plenty of trash to each other during Dwyer High football practices, so don’t expect Tommylee Lewis and Darrell Hunter be quiet if they face each other in the next few years.

Lewis, Dwyer’s small, speedy receiver, committed to Northern Illinois after visiting the school this weekend. He’ll enter the Mid-American Conference with Hunter, a cornerback who committed to Bowling Green last month.

Lewis has this advantage in the swagger department: He’s joining the better team. Northern Illinois (8-0 MAC, 11-3 overall) won the MAC West and routed Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl. Meanwhile, Bowling Green (1-7, 1-11) finished in a tie for last in the MAC East.

After transferring to Dwyer from Palm Beach Lakes, Lewis (5-8, 160, No. 62 on the PBGametime Big Board) caught 31 passes for 7 touchdowns. His 595 receiving yards placed him fifth among large schools.

He earned national recognition for a highlight-reel play in Dwyer’s controversial season-opening 26-22 loss to Cleveland-Glenville. Lewis’ acrobatic grab in the end zone was ruled incomplete, though replays showed he was in bounds when he made the catch. The play made ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays of the night.

Verbal commitments are non-binding, and players can sign official letters of intent on national signing day, Feb. 2.
