Glades Day wins Gear Up Grant funds from contact-lens manufacturer

By Jeff Greer

Glades Day will receive $2,500 in grant funds and each athlete on the team who needs corrective lenses will receive one year’s supply from CooperVision, a contact-lens manufacturer.

CooperVision gave away $25,000 in funding to 10 high schools as part of the Gear Up Grant, a program that was established to help young athletes get athletic equipment they need while promoting eye health. Glades Day will use the funding to purchase enough uniforms so that the junior varsity and varsity teams don’t have to share. The Gators will also buy new practice balls after they were recently stolen.

Glades Day’s JV quarterback Giovanni Lugo applied for the grant for his team, which repeated as the Class 1B state champions in December.
