Park Vista RB Tre Mason narrows college list to three

By Jeff Greer

Park Vista running back Tre Mason, arguably the best back in the area, has narrowed his college choices down to three schools.

Mason said Sunday night that his final three includes Auburn, West Virginia and Mississippi. Mason (5-9, 180, No. 7 on the Big Board) will take an official visit to Mississippi this weekend. He officially visited Auburn over the Nov. 13-14 weekend, just after Park Vista’s season ended. He also took an official visit to West Virginia the first weekend in December.

He plans to wait until after his final visit to make up his mind, although he hasn’t mentioned a specific date for his announcement. National Signing Day for recruits is Feb. 2, though prospects don’t have to sign that day.

Mason ran for 1,643 yards and 24 touchdowns this past season. He earned Palm Beach Post All-Area First Team honors and was a finalist for the Lou Groza High School Player of the Year award. In addition to his final three, Rivals.com says Mason’s received scholarship offers from 17 other schools, including Penn State and Michigan.

One of the bigger mysteries in Mason’s recruiting has been the disinterest from Florida’s Big Three: Miami, Florida and Florida State, none of which has pursued the lightning-fast back. According to Rivals, the only in-state school to offer Mason a scholarship so far is FIU. That doesn’t bother Mason at all.

“I guess they didn’t see anything in me,” Mason said in December. “But the No. 1 team in the nation (Auburn) does.”

Mason hasn’t talked about the emergence of freshman running back Michael Dyer and his sophomore counterpart Onterio McCalebb at Auburn and how that impacts his decision. Same goes for the impending coaching change at West Virginia, which will phase out current coach Bill Stewart after next season in favor of coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen, who was recently hired away from Oklahoma State.
