Boca Raton kicker David Bicknell commits to Harvard

By Jeff Greer

Boca Raton kicker David Bicknell had a few enticing options.

The Lou Groza High School Place-Kicker of the Year had last year’s top two Ivy League programs — Harvard and Penn — chasing him. So the eight-ranked student in his senior class of 671 students really couldn’t go wrong. But in the end, his original favorite took the cake.

Bicknell (6-1, 190, No. 39 on the Big Board) verbally committed to Harvard on Monday afternoon.

“(Harvard) has a better kicking situation — I’ll be able to come in and start,” said Bicknell.

He added that having his brother Danny, who’s a freshman at Harvard, up in Cambridge, Mass., helped. The Crimson had been hard after him for some time. Penn entered the picture later, and Bicknell enjoyed his official visit to the Quakers’ Philadelphia campus. But it was just too little, too late.

“I don’t see any other schools being able to take Harvard away from me or me away from Harvard,” Bicknell said in December after winning the Groza award.

Turns out he was right.
