Catching up with Florida State commit Nick O’Leary

By Matt Porter

For a story that will run in tomorrow’s Palm Beach Post (and can be viewed now at PBGametime), Seminoles writer Tom D’Angelo sat down with Dwyer senior Nick O’Leary, who on Jan. 22 announced his commitment to FSU. O’Leary spoke about FSU, the recruiting process and his new teammates. Here are the highlights:

On the recruiting process:

It was fun in the beginning. I didn’t think I was going to be what I am now. Once all those letters started rolling in and then all the scholarships. I was just amazed at first. Once all the coaches started calling I thought it was real cool at first. It started getting annoying a little bit that they would call every day. I didn’t like to talk on the phone that much. I didn’t feel like I had better things to do but I just … I would call them when I wanted to talk to them. Most of the time there was nothing really to talk about. They just wanted to tell you about football and sometimes I just don’t want to talk about football.

On Florida State recruiting him:

Florida State was kind of late. I got the offer from Bobby Bowden. I didn’t look at them that much. I looked at the first couple of schools that offered me [note: O'Leary said he received five offers Sept. 1 of his junior year: Boston College, Miami, Rutgers, South Carolina and Tennessee]. Once I went up there I loved it. My cousin is up there and I had a fun time with him.

On Florida State offering him during his junior season:

I was kind of like, it’s another offer. I was kind of excited because my aunt went to Florida State and my uncle went to Florida State. I called my aunt Barbara and she was [like] I’m so excited. It was good.

On why he chose FSU:

I want to go someplace that if tomorrow is my last day playing football I’d still like to be there. FSU is that place.

On his potential role in FSU’s offense:

They said they are going us me just like I play here, going outside, going to the slot, going down. Hopefully they’ll do that.
I’d like to play all over the place. I don’t feel like I’m going to be bullied out there. I feel like if I keep working hard how I am right now I’ll do pretty well.

What are your impressions of Jimbo Fisher?

My uncle and my grandpa knew him before I did. They said they liked him a lot. When I met him, he likes to do a lot of the same stuff I do. He likes to hunt a lot. We had stories to tell each other about hunting. He was telling me about him going out hunting. He doesn’t like to sit. He likes to go crawl through the bushes and shoot something.

What schools were behind FSU?

Florida State was above all. Not from the start. Early on I liked Alabama and LSU and Miami. I liked Miami at the very first.

I followed Georgia growing up and I went to Georgia spring games. I had an unofficial visit there.

I just didn’t want to go right after my dad. I like Florida State more than I liked Georgia.

Ohio State contacted [me] but [I] had no interest.

Did you ever get scared off when FSU was 7-6?

From the beginning I noticed they were getting better. They got the number one recruiting class this year. I think that will help next year’s recruiting class also.

I didn’t look at the (record). Never concerned me. I’m not going somewhere because I think they are going to win the national championship.
The main thing I followed was just the recruiting class and looking at who they are signing.

Did you talk to any FSU commits?

Talked to Giorgio Newberry and Kelvin Benjamin. I think I’m rooming with Benjamin.

How good do you think FSU’s going to be?

I think we’re going to be real good next year.

What are you looking forward to most at Florida State?

I want to make it to the league and just have fun.

On possibly facing Jacoby Brissett in college:

It won’t mean that much since we are both on offense and I won’t be playing against him. I won’t like it too much because he’s a good quarterback.

Do you think you’d wind up together?

At some point I did. Once I really chose FSU I didn’t think it would happen anymore.

Did you try to talk him into it?

I did. But I didn’t think it was going to work.
