Pahokee’s Rontavious Atkins to sign with Western Michigan, not USF

In a late development, Pahokee athlete Rontavious Atkins has changed his college plans.

Atkins (6-1, 190, No. 34 on the Big Board) originally committed to USF last year, but has changed his commitment to Western Michigan after a snafu with USF over his ACT scores had him facing a greyshirt at the Tampa university.

According to Atkins’ mother, USF told Atkins that he would be greyshirted before the senior received his most recent ACT scores because his previous scores didn’t meet the Bulls’ requirements. But even though his newest results met USF’s requirements, the Bulls still labeled Atkins as a greyshirt.

He visited Western Michigan this weekend, and Western Michigan’s coaches met with Atkins’ mother. In the end, Western Michigan pulled a late-season coup to get Pahokee’s most talented college prospect.

Atkins played numerous positions for the Blue Devils, from defensive back and linebacker to running back. He could fill multiple roles for Western Michigan, which has received 14 verbal commitments so far. Western Michigan also has offered a scholarship to Atkins’ teammate Joe Eason, who played defensive back and quarterback for Pahokee in 2010.

As a senior, Atkins earned Palm Beach Post All-Area Second Team honors.
