Former Olympic Heights RB David Tanis transfers to American Heritage

By Jeff Greer

Former Olympic Heights running back David Tanis and his mother wanted a change.

The sophomore tailback said Monday that he transferred from Olympic Heights to American Heritage. No one at American Heritage could be reached Monday to confirm Tanis’ enrollment, while Olympic Heights coach Mitch Henghold said he didn’t believe Tanis had yet withdrawn from his old school. But Henghold said the move didn’t surprise him.

“People have been talking about it for weeks,” Henghold said. “He was a first-year starter. He did his job. He’s fast and powerful. I think he has a good future. He was just learning how to play the game.”

Tanis will compete for carries with senior-to-be Jeramy Gaskins (797 yards, 6 TDs) and junior-to-be Greg Bryant (690 yards, 13 TDs). American Heritage used three backs (and quarterback Marcus Davis) last season on its way to the Class 1A state championship game, and the Stallions return enough talent to make them an early favorite to return to the state championships.

“My mom wanted me to leave for a better education,” Tanis said, adding that he’d already made the move and is enrolled at American Heritage. “She told me she wanted me to leave (Olympic Heights).”

Tanis (5-8, 175) ran for 856 yards and 10 touchdowns for Olympic Heights during his sophomore season, helping the Lions finish 7-3. He earned Palm Beach Post All-Area Second Team selection among Big Schools (3A-6A) players.
