Months after resigning, Inlet Grove track coach Anton Pastuszak returns

By Matt Porter

Coach P is back home.

Inlet Grove track coach Anton Pastuszak, who started the Hurricanes’ program in 2006 without the help of athletic department funding and was featured in an article in the Post in April, resigned in May without giving a reason. But last month, he had a change of heart.

“Just to make a long story short, we had several discussions, and I let him know we wanted to him to come back and he agreed to it,” Inlet Grove Athletic Director Jack Crumity said.

Neither Pastuszak nor Crumity would go into detail about why the coach left, or what was said to bring him back. Pastuszak said it took “major introspection on my part.”

“There were some underlying things that I don’t want to discuss, but he’s back, I’m happy, he’s happy,” Crumity said. “We were able to put something together and he agreed to come back.”

After Pastuszak left, several athletes left the team, including state-level high-jumper Tyrico McGriff, who transferred to Palm Beach Gardens for his senior year. The coach said his team is 15 athletes deep, but winning isn’t what’s expected this season. He’s excited for Inlet Grove’s new facilities – the school moved to Suncoast’s old campus, giving the Hurricanes’ program a track for the first time – and grateful for the second chance.

“If we come in last place I can live with that,” he said. “I know I’m going to give my best, and I expect my kids to do that.”
