Grandview Prep center Ismaila Dauda to go to prep school for a year

By Jeff Greer

Because of an issue with his academic credits that he earned before he transferred to Grandview Prep, 6-foot-9 center Ismaila Dauda will have to delay his arrival at Miami for a year.

Upon entering the United States from Nigeria, Dauda enrolled for one school year at Miami-Choice Prep, a small private school that is an independent member of the FHSAA for basketball. According to Grandview Prep coach Joe Dawson, the NCAA doesn’t recognize the academic credits Dauda received at Choice Prep, meaning he has exhausted his high school athletics eligibility but does not have the credits to qualify for Miami, where he has committed to play college hoops.

Dauda and Dawson said Thursday after the Class 1A championship game that Dauda would spend the 2011-12 school year at prep school.

“We’re working on that,” Dawson said. “(Dauda’s first year in the U.S.) was kind of a wasted year for him.”

Dauda said Miami had no preferences for where he’d prep for next season. He had not spoken much to Miami during the season, which only just ended Thursday. Now that Grandview is finished, the pair will focus on getting Dauda qualified for 2012.

Dauda was fantastic all season for the Pride, and played well at the state championships in Lakeland. He had 19 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in the semifinals, and 26 points and eight rebounds in the finals. He averaged 20 points and 14.4 rebounds his final season.
