Who’s No. 1? Who knows? Plenty of questions after wild week in baseball

By Matt Porter

Well, the next Palm Beach Post baseball Top 10 is going to be interesting.

Here’s what we know. Thursday night, Palm Beach Central lost to Wellington, the latest surprise in a season that so far has been full of ‘em.

Wednesday, Jupiter lost to South Fork, and on Tuesday West Boca — with its ace on the mound — survived an early scare against John I. Leonard. Meanwhile, Santaluces (7-1) keeps rolling along. Then you have Trinity Christian playing all these out-of-area teams, Boca Raton at 5-1, Palm Beach Gardens at 6-0 and … well, who’s No. 1 right now?

West Boca holds the flag, but what if Palm Beach Central’s Bobby Poyner outguns fellow lefty Parker Danciu in Saturday’s matchup of the teams?

Does Santaluces, which has an on-fire Kyle Smith throwing bullets, have a better team than anyone right now?

Is Wellington’s offense, which was stifled in a 1-0 loss to Dwyer, enough to merit real consideration for a top-5 slot? Hasn’t Dwyer’s pitching and defense proven itself strong enough to put them up there with the best?

Where do American Heritage, Boca Raton and Summit Christian fit in all of this?

And at No. 6 in last week’s poll, is Palm Beach Gardens too low?

How much weight do we give to the season-opening D-1 Slam at Santaluces, which saw Jupiter lose to Trinity Christian and stomp Palm Beach Central; Palm Beach Central squeak by Summit Christian; and Santaluces barely beat Atlantic?

Plenty of stuff to sort out over the weekend, for sure.
