Royal Palm Beach’s Christian Alba signs with Division III Massachusetts school

By Jeff Greer

He didn’t play varsity football his junior or senior years, but that didn’t stop Royal Palm Beach senior Christian Alba from pursuing his dream of playing college football.

Despite not having a highlight tape to show recruiters, Alba, who plans to play slot receiver in college, signed with Division III school Nichols College. Nichols is located in Dudley, Mass., roughly halfway between Worcester, Mass., and Hartford, Conn., and is a little more than an hour southwest of Boston.

Alba was kept off the football team for the final two years of high school because of his grades. He said his 1.8 grade-point average wasn’t good enough for him to play, but former Royal Palm Beach coach Frank Kunf helped Alba look for colleges after the senior told his coach how badly he wanted to play college football. Alba eventually worked his GPA up to a 2.0, enough for him to attract some small schools at the Palm Beach County recruiting fair in late February.

Sure enough, Nichols came knocking and Alba happily answered.

“I’m just glad someone gave me the opportunity,” Alba said Sunday night. “I hope I can prove to them that it was worth it.”
