King (6-2, 185) played linebacker, defensive end and strong safety for Pahokee last season. One of his season highlights was a fumble recovery he ran back 36 yards for a touchdown in a 46-0 win over Inlet Grove.

When asked via Facebook message why he was transferring, King replied, “better program and I will play my position that I will go to college for.”

King said that position is safety. He did not reply to a question asking how he plans to transfer to Glades Central.

FHSAA transfer rules do not permit student-athletes to switch schools solely for athletic purposes.

When informed of that, King backed off his comments.  ”Football is not the issue of me attending the school,” King wrote in a message to the Post. “Academics first then sports. It’s definitely not sports because I can play anywhere in the world with my talent. The whole purpose of changing schools is because I will no longer live in Pahokee. But me going there for sports is a no.”

Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson said he was disappointed but won’t try to block King from leaving.

“I wish him all the best,” Thompson said. “I hope he’s able to find success, except against us.”

If his transfer goes through, King would not be eligible to play in Glades Central’s spring game, but would be able to participate in fall practice.

Pahokee went a disappointing 3-7, including a 58-0 loss to Glades Central in the Muck Bowl.

Glades Central, which lost in the Class 2A state championship game, replaced three-year coach Jessie Hester with former coach Roosevelt Blackmon.

The Raiders will return their entire starting linebacking corps: upcoming seniors Jatavis Brown, the 2011 Palm Beach Post small schools defensive player of the year; first-team All-Area selection Dominique Gibson; and second-team All-Area pick Don’Kevious Johnson.
