Track: Palm Beach Central’s Chernock gets hall call

By Matt Porter

Palm Beach Central cross country and track and field coach Roy Chernock will be one of six coaches inducted into the College of William & Mary’s Athletics Hall of Fame next month.

The ceremony will take place at the Crowne Plaza Fort Magruder Hotel on April 9.

Chernock coached track at William & Mary from 1977-1990 and during his 13-year tenure, he set the foundation for the Tribe’s successes over the last two decades.

His teams had four NCAA finishes in track (two indoor and two outdoor), produced six All-American honors and set 27 school records.

Five of his athletes went on to qualify in the Olympic Trials for the U.S. and seven competed internationally for Team US. Six of them are already in the William & Mary Hall of Fame.

Chernock, who moved to South Florida in the 1990s and has also coached John I. Leonard in his semi-retirement, is already a member of the NYU Hall of Fame. He is a 1950 graduate of the school.
