LIVE BLOG: Oak Hill squeaks past Dwyer in ESPN Rise Invitational semis

By Jeff Greer

BETHESDA, Md. — Dwyer basketball gets to play two basketball player factories in two days. Yesterday, the Panthers beat Nevada’s Findlay Prep 70-61.

Now, in the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational semifinals, Dwyer faces Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy.

Dwyer and Oak Hill tip off at 5:30 on ESPN2, and Montrose Christian (Md.) and Boys and Girls (N.Y.) are playing at 3:30.

If you want to know much about Oak Hill, here’s your brief rundown: Carmelo Anthony, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo and Duke’s Nolan Smith all went there. This year’s stud is Quinn Cook, a McDonald’s All-American who will join Winter Park’s Austin Rivers at Duke this fall.

FINAL
Oak Hill beat Dwyer 76-73 in a great game. Dwyer had a few looks at the end but couldn’t convert. More later on PBGametime.com.

AFTER THREE QUARTERS
Dwyer leads Oak Hill 52-51 at the end of three.

Much like Findlay Prep yesterday, Oak Hill came out and went on a quick 9-2 run to take the lead. Quinn Cook looks determined to assert himself even more and it’s working. But Dwyer, with Joel James on the bench with four fouls, is hanging with Oak Hill. Jacoby Brissett hasn’t attacked nearly as much as he did yesterday. Maybe that’ll change in the fourth quarter.

AT THE HALF
Dwyer leads Oak Hill 36-33 at halftime.

Terrell Harris has done a magnificent job defending Quin Cook so far. Cook’s created his own shot a few times and made the plays you’d expect him to, but he hasn’t gone off. And that’s a credit to Harris, who might be Palm Beach County’s best defender. Cook has 12 points on 11 shots.

Dwyer stats: Vic Adams has 11 points off three 3-pointers. Derrick Davis has eight points and two boards. Jacoby Brissett and Terrell Harris each have six points.

Dwyer’s shooting 47 percent as a team and outrebounding Oak Hill 19-16. The Panthers have also turned Oak Hill over eight times.

Oak Hill stats: Quinn Cook has 12 points, three boards and two turnovers. Jordan Adams has nine points and Damien Wilson has eight.

Oak Hill’s shooting 50 percent but just 4 of 11 from 3.

AFTER ONE QUARTER
Vic Adams has a handful of threes and Dwyer leads Oak Hill 22-14 after the first.

Dwyer came out looking to run, pressing and pushing the tempo. That’s a change from yesterday when the Panthers were happy to play a halfcourt-set game with Findlay Prep. Terrell Harris has found his jumper early on with a few nice looks from the baseline. Joel James got two quick fouls and went to the bench with 5:35 to go in the quarter.

Safe to say Oak Hill’s 6-11 center AJ Hammons has bothered Dwyer early. He drew James’ second foul and has made anything in the paint difficult for Dwyer. Which is why Dwyer is running a bit more.
