Baseball: Smith, Istler, Greener headed to FACA all-star games

Three area players were tabbed to represent District 17 in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association High School All-Star Games.

Santaluces ace Kyle Smith, Wellington right-hander Andrew Istler and Jupiter righty Calvin Greener were chosen for the games, which will be played May 26-28 in Sebring.

Spanish River coach Bill Harvey, the District 17 chairman, said one or two more area players may be named as alternates next week.

District 17 consists of Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee County high schools.

FACA honors given: The District 17 FACA coaches voted Monday for their players and coaches of the year.

The coaches chose Smith (Class 6A), Istler (5A), Cardinal Newman catcher Shane Osborn (3A) and American Heritage catcher Jacob O’Keefe (2A) as their players of the year.

They selected Jupiter’s Doug Ferguson (6A), Wellington’s Scott Riddle (5A), Cardinal Newman’s Jack Kokinda (3A) and American Heritage’s Carm Mazza (2A) as their coaches of the year.

Palm Beach County All-Star vote: The voting for the 2011 Dick Howser Palm Beach County All-Star Game will be held at 4 p.m. May 1 at Roger Dean Stadium. All FACA coaches are asked to attend.

The game is scheduled for June 4 at Roger Dean.
