West Boca Raton has fired Dave Currier as its athletic director, Currier confirmed Saturday.
Currier, 55, said he and the West Boca administration had a “difference of opinions, a difference of philosophies.” He’ll remain at West Boca as a physical education teacher.
“Very simply put, we’ve decided to go in another direction,” West Boca principal Mark Stenner said. “There was no major incident or anything like that that took place.”
Currier has worked for the Palm Beach County school district since 1985, and he was West Boca’s athletics director since the school’s opening in 2004.
During Currier’s tenure, West Boca regularly produced winning teams, particularly in boys’ baseball and football and girls’ flag football, volleyball, soccer and softball. The girls’ volleyball (2005) and softball (2006 and 2007) teams are the only West Boca squads to reach the state finals in their classes.
West Boca football has sent 11 players to college since the school’s start. Three more signed with Division I programs this year, with kicker Mauro Bondi going to Nebraska, receiver Robert Lockhart signing with Virginia Tech and defensive lineman Corey King heading to FIU.
“It’s been a great ride,” Currier said. “We started from scratch, from a fresh school. The coaches and kids have all been great. We put something very special together.”
