Dwyer sprinter Jethro St. Hubert uses one word to describe his track team: Determination.
That, plus an outstanding coach, is his explanation for Dwyer sending one of the largest teams – 16 athletes – to Friday’s Class 3A state meet in Winter Park.
Three of the state qualifiers – jumper Booker T. Thurmond and sprinters Wayne Brown and Delio Allen – are in their first year running track. St. Hubert, who runs the third leg of the Panthers’ 400 relay, credits 78-year-old coach Lincoln Knowles for molding them quickly and teaching them to want nothing less than a state medal.
“You can tell he’s still got it,” St. Hubert said of his coach, a 45-year veteran and a member of the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame. “He’ll take these first-year kids, and show them like this,” he said, mimicking proper sprint takeoff. “He’s great at explaining it to you.”
Knowles, who as a senior Palm Beach in 1951 tied a national record in the high hurdles, is self-taught in track’s other disciplines. He taught Dwyer senior Daniel Forgony the discus and shot put, and Forgony stands a chance of taking home double gold in both events Friday.
Tuesday on a back field at Dwyer, Forgony had a hard sweat going, throwing the discus as far as he could, walking to retrieve it, and throwing again.
“I’m not going to let a sophomore beat me,” said Forgony, referencing his nearest state challenger in the discus, Gulf Breeze 10th-grader Austin Droogsma, whose 172-foot, 11-inch qualifying throw topped Forgony’s 166-4. “I’m coming to win,” he said.
Palm Beach Lakes senior hurdler Emarkis Gunn may feel similar about Dwyer junior Morel Pitt, who stands in the way of double gold. Gunn’s qualifying time of 14.10 in the 110 hurdles is second to Pitt’s 13.93. Gunn is the state’s top seed in the 300 (37.24), but teammate Malik Lewis, also a senior, is third (38.15).
