Class 3A state track: Dwyer’s Daniel Forgony wins discus gold

By Matt Porter

WINTER PARK — Dwyer senior Daniel Forgony said he wasn’t going to let a sophomore beat him in the discus.

Forgony made good on his word, throwing the plate 169 feet, 11 inches at the Class 3A state track meet Friday, beating the next competitor by more than 12 feet. Fort Myers sophomore Devin Williams (157-2) was second.

Given the wet, misty conditions, Dwyer coach Lincoln Knowles expected Forgony’s throw to be a bit less than the norm. Forgony’s best is 186 feet. “It wasn’t the best weather for discus,” Knowles said.

Forgony also won silver in the shot put with a 53-5.25 mark. Winter Haven senior Adonis Kirkland (54-6) won the event. Forgony’s best effort was 56 feet, but he scratched.

Dwyer senior Shubert Bastien just missed qualifying for the finals in the shot put, finishing ninth with a 50-0.5 toss. Bastien’s first throw was 52 feet, but his foot crossed the line on his follow-through.

Dwyer junior Morel Pitt, the top qualifier in the boys 110 hurdles, qualified for the finals, joining Palm Beach Lakes seniors Malik Lewis and Emarkis Gunn, who barely qualified due to a bad start.

Dwyer’s boys 400 relay team of senior Tommylee Lewis and juniors Delio Allen, Jethro St. Hubert and Wayne Brown qualified for the finals.

Palm Beach Lakes junior Shamaz Quince (36-6.5) placed sixth in the girls triple jump.

More to come.
