Video: Highlights from the 2011 Dick Howser All-Star Game at Roger Dean Stadium

By Matt Porter

The 2011 Dick Howser All-Star Game was a tie — 3-3, in 10 innings — but no one felt ambivalent about the event itself.

“I think it was great, and the kids loved it,” said Dwyer coach Frank Torre, who coached the North team in this, the 24th annual game, and also played in the 1995 game as a senior at Dwyer. “Just getting treated like a professional baseball player for one day is pretty cool.”

The players and coaches wore the uniforms of the Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads, donated from the organizations. They dressed and were attended to in the clubhouses and took batting practice and infield on a perfectly manicured field. The stands at Roger Dean Stadium weren’t packed — each of the 44 players had six tickets to give to family and friends, and about 100 people bought tickets — but it was a professional-quality way for Palm Beach County’s best seniors to end their high school careers.

Some will play in college, some may be drafted in Monday’s MLB Draft, and some may hang up the spikes entirely, but it was a grand finale for all. Here’s a collection of sights and sounds from a day that was hardly about the score, and mostly about having a good time.

Check out a gallery of good photos from the game, with plenty of in-game action and postgame scenes. Click here to see all the images.

You can also check out some other videos, including an interview with West Boca Raton right-hander Michael Kelly, who talks about Monday’s MLB Draft among other topics, and a fun (scary?) clip of Kelly smashing a foul ball close to the North team’s dugout and hearing about it.
