2011 MLB Draft: Jupiter grad Jack Armstrong chosen 99th overall (3rd round) by Houston Astros

By Matt Porter

Big Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Armstrong Jr., a 2008 Jupiter grad, was picked by the Houston Astros on Monday.

Armstrong, a junior who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 235 pounds, throws his fastball 88 to 94 mph. As a reliever for the Commodores this season, Armstrong struck out 17 batters in 17 innings, posting a 2.65 ERA and holding opponents to a .111 batting average in 13 appearances.

After his senior season at Jupiter, Armstrong was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 36th round of the 2008 draft. He turned down a reported $1 million signing bonus to join Vanderbilt.

Armstrong’s father, Jack, pitched in the major leagues for seven seasons and was a 1990 National League All-Star, a member of the 1990 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds and the 1993 Florida Marlins. He went 9-17 with a 4.43 ERA for the original Fish.
