2011 MLB Draft: More Palm Beach County players taken on draft’s final day

By Matt Porter

Two right-handed pitchers, Summit Christian’s John Costa and Jupiter’s Ryan Harris, and Wellington shortstop Mitch Morales saw their names scroll across the screen on the final day of the 2011 MLB Draft.

Costa was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 31st round (935th overall). Costa, a Florida International commit, is a 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. His best pitch is a sharp-breaking curveball. Costa went 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 53 innings.

Harris went in the 37th round (1139th overall) to the New York Yankees. Harris, 6-2 and 175 pounds, is committed to Florida. He went 6-2 with a 0.99 ERA during the regular season, averaging more than a strikeout per inning (64 SO in 63.1 IP). He also hit .353 and played first base.

Morales was selected in the 43rd round (1297th overall) by the Washington Nationals. The 5-10, 170-pound speedster led off for the Wolverines.

In total, 25 players who graduated from Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast high schools were selected, 10 from this year’s graduating class.

The record for area high school seniors drafted in is 11, set in 1998 and equaled in 2003. In 1995, when the MLB Draft went 87 rounds, 13 local high schoolers were selected. Baseball adopted a 50-round draft format in 1998.
