Dwyer DB Julian Whigham commits to Syracuse

By Matt Porter

Along with the red, white and blue, there was plenty of orange at Julian Whigham’s Fourth of July celebration.

Whigham, a senior-to be who plays cornerback for Dwyer High, told Syracuse coaches yesterday he is heading there next fall. He only needed to take a visit to the campus and meet the coaching staff before making his early decision.

“I’ve always been a fan,” said Whigham, who was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and grew up a devoted follower of the Orange. His family moved to South Florida when Whigham was young, he said, and “my mom gave me the opportunity to choose to root for the Florida teams or the New York teams, and I always chose the New York teams.”

“I just latched onto Syracuse,” he said, noting that the Orange, which competes in the Big East, is the only BCS football program in New York State.

Whigham, who plans to study journalism at Syracuse, had verbal offers from Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. He also drew interest from several Division I schools, including Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Northwestern, South Florida, Texas A&M and Wake Forest.

Whigham, who is 6-foot-1, 170 pounds and runs a 4.55 40-yard dash, started at safety for Dwyer last year and this year may see time at cornerback. Coach Jack Daniels said Whigham projects as a safety in college.

He will also be targeted more in Dwyer’s multiple-look offense. He caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown in 2010.
