Park Vista students who alleged cheerleader discrimination to reject offer of more tryouts

By Matt Porter

BOYNTON BEACH — Several of the black Park Vista High School students who complained that no black students received spots on the school’s fall cheerleading team have rejected an offer from the school to open tryouts for four more spots in the fall.

Last week, Park Vista’s principal and athletic director met privately with the girls and their parents to address the concerns, which were raised before the Palm Beach County School Board in June.

At the end of the meeting, the school offered to open up four more spots on the 36-member team, and allow all girls who did not make it to audition for the new spots in August.

But on Tuesday, several of the black Park Vista cheerleaders met and decided to reject the offer.
