Iowa baseball team sets national record with 84th win in a row

By Jeff Greer

Martensdale-St. Marys, a small school in suburban Des Moines, set the national record for consecutive high school baseball wins by winning its 84th straight game Tuesday.

The Blue Devils beat Bussey-Twin Cedars 10-0 to extend the streak that started in 2009. New Hampshire’s Portsmouth High previously held the record of 83 wins in a row.

“It’s bigger than us,” Martensdale-St. Marys infielder Robert Walker told the Des Moines Register. “For the older people who have been around 70-some years, they’ve never seen anything like this happen. But for us, this is just normal.”

Both streaks are ongoing. Portsmouth, which reportedly only plays a 20-game schedule, will bring its current streak into 2012. Martensdale-St. Marys, a school with fewer than 130 students, is still alive in the Iowa Class 1A state tournament.
