Florida Gulf Coast University received an early commitment from one of the area’s brightest young baseball standouts.
Palm Beach Central center fielder Gage Morey, a junior-to-be, pledged to FGCU.
Morey started last year as a sophomore and hit .372 during the regular season. He was an All-Area honorable mention.
Other baseball notes:
* Former Broncos right-hander Mitch Blakeney, a Palm Beach State signee, has a partial tear in his throwing elbow. If rehab is unsuccessful, he may elect to have Tommy John surgery.
Blakeney became the Broncos’ No. 1 starter for the District 9-6A tournament after ace Bobby Poyner (Florida) suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Blakeney went 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 40 regular-season innings.
* Poyner, who signed with Florida, will begin throwing again in three weeks. He underwent labrum surgery in April. In his senior season, the left-hander went 6-1 with a 1.91 and 51 strikeouts in 40.1 innings, batted .394 and was a first-team All-Area selection.
* Jordan Brinson, who spent time in the Broncos’ outfield and at designated hitter in his senior season, signed with Seminole State, a junior college in Sanford.
* West Boca Raton right-hander Matt Warren committed to Daytona State College. Warren, a senior-to-be, was a reliable No. 3 starter and bullpen option last season for the state champion Bulls.
