Jupiter dismisses softball coach Rick Williams

By Jeff Greer

Jupiter softball coach Rick Williams said he’d been relieved of his role on Wednesday.

Williams said Jupiter Principal Cheryl Alligood told the coach that the school was “moving in another direction” in a meeting.

“Not sure which direction she is going, and she would not give me a reason why I was being released,” Williams wrote in an email.

Williams coached Jupiter for 10 seasons, leading the Warriors to five district championships and six regional playoff appearances. At times during the 2011 season Jupiter was ranked in the top five in the state, but injuries slowed the Warriors and they lost in the semifinals of the District 9-6A tournament. Jupiter will return a very talented roster in 2012, including rising junior pitcher Kylee Hanson and rising senior centerfielder Devin Williams, two of the top players in the area.

“My only thoughts on why I was dismissed is that she couldn’t deal with the parents’ complaints,” Williams said in an email. “When asked if (Jupiter Athletic Director) Mike DeLeonardo knew about (Williams’ dismissal), her reply was that it was her decision and that was it.”

DeLeonardo didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the school’s decision.
