If their preseason rankings are any indication, Rivals expects Dwyer to beat Glades Central in the teams’ season-opening rumble in the Muck. MaxPreps, however, does not.
According to Rivals’ preseason top 100, Dwyer is the third-most powerful program in Florida, and Glades Central is No. 8 in the state.
Dwyer, which finished 12-2 and lost in last year’s Class 4A state semifinals, is the No. 12 team in the nation. The Panthers have a slew of talented seniors, including huge linemen Patrick Miller and Mike Minns, transfer quarterback Faton Bauta and linebacker Gage Batten, receiver Julian Whigham, and underclassman receivers Clinton Stephens and Johnnie Dixon.
Glades Central, which also finished 12-2, returns three powerful linebackers – seniors Dominique Gibson, Jatavis Brown and Don’Kevious Johnson – one of the best receivers in the county (Jaime Wilson) and two of the area’s best cornerbacks (William Likely and Crevon LeBlanc) from a team that made the state finals last year. The also Raiders feature up-and-coming running back Aaron Baker.
Seffner-Armwood, which beat Dwyer
45-44 22-20 on a last-second field goal in the state semifinals, is the No. 5 team nationally and is the top team in Florida. It’s unclear if Armwood will drop after losing star running back Matt Jones for 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.
Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, which Dwyer will likely have to beat to earn a state title in a realigned Class 7A, is No. 10 in the country. Cocoa, which beat Glades Central in last year’s Class 2A state final, is No. 13.
Other Florida teams in Rivals’ rankings: Miami-Norland is No. 18, the only other Florida team in the top 20. Miami-Columbus (34), Bradenton-Manatee (36), Tallahassee-Lincoln (56), Lakeland (82), Miramar (83) and Winter Park (84) are the other Florida teams in the top 100.
* MaxPreps has Dwyer at No. 17 nationally and Glades Central three spots ahead at No. 14. The site ranks St. Thomas Aquinas at No. 4 and Armwood as the country’s second-best team.
* MaxPreps also released its preseason prospect lists.
Boynton Beach OL Jessamen Dunker (No. 59) is the only Palm Beach County player on the Class of 2012 top 100 list.
Glades Day RB Kelvin Taylor is on the rising junior (2013) list. Atlantic WR Adly Enoicy, Dwyer WR Clint Stephens and Palm Beach Central OL K.C. McDermott are on the rising sophomore (2014) list.
