Serena Williams select Suncoast’s Dixie Smith for M Foundation’s Silver M Award

By Jeff Greer

Serena Williams chose Suncoast diver and gymnast Dixie Smith for the M Foundation’s Silver M Award this week. The award is a scholarship given to high school athletes who are “exemplary role models” in their communities.

Smith, 17, will be a senior at Suncoast this year. She was a Palm Beach County All-Conference selection for diving as a junior. But it was her work away from the pool and mat that earned her the award, which the M Foundation gives out in coordination with beRecruited.com, a national recruiting service for multiple prep sports.

“Giving back to the community is an important aspect of my life,” Smith said in a statement. “I am honored to have been named the winner of the M Foundation’s Silver M Award.”

Smith volunteers at Renaissance Learning Center, a charter school for developmentally disabled children, and she also teaches gymnastics at The Gymnastics Revolution. She teaches surfing to autistic children and has participated in Surfers for Autism events for the past three years. She started the Autism Speaks club at Suncoast.

For the award, Smith will receive a $1,000 college scholarship and a $1,000 donation to a charity of her choice.
