Dwyer, Glades Central ranked in Sports Illustrated’s national top 25

By Jeff Greer

As if the first-week game between Dwyer and Glades Central needed any more hype, Sports Illustrated has ranked both programs in its preseason top 25.

Dwyer is ranked 11th in the national poll. Glades Central is No. 22. Seffner-Armwood (3), St. Thomas Aquinas (7) and Cocoa (18) are the other Florida programs ranked, making the Sunshine State the state with the most schools in the top 25. Texas had four and California and Ohio each had two. New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep is ranked first.

Here’s what the Sports Illustrated said about the two area schools.

11. Dwyer (West Palm Beach, Fla.)

2010 Record: 12-2

First Game: Sept. 2 at Glades Central (Belle Glade, Fla.)

Dwyer’s defense notched four shutouts last season, surrendering 6.64 points per game. The offense is potent this season. In addition to four-star offensive lineman Patrick Miller, the Panthers add three-star quarterback Faton Bauta, a 6-3, 225-pound transfer from Poly Prep (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who doubles as a fullback and linebacker.

22. Glades Central (Belle Glade, Fla.)

2010 Record: 12-2, Florida 2A Runner-up

First Game: Aug. 26 at Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.)

Glades Central lost to Cocoa 14-13 in last year’s Florida 2A Final, a heartbreaking defeat after outgaining the Tigers 298-153. Glades’ road to redemption should also be defensive-minded. Dominique Gibson heads a trio of Division-I caliber linebackers.
