Former Dwyer standout Nick O’Leary earns nickname, early respect from FSU coaches, teammates

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley had a strong feeling that prize tight end recruit Nick O’Leary was going to be good. But Coley knew he’d have to see the Dwyer graduate face legitimate college defenders first.

All it took was a few days on the steamy practice fields across the parking lot from Doak Campbell Stadium for Coley to be proven right.

“You watch him and it kind of brings a smile to your face,” Coley said of the All American. “You go, ‘man.’ And these other guys are going, ‘wow, I got to cover this guy?’

O’Leary, grandson of golfing great jack Nicklaus, has turned heads during his two weeks at Florida State, this despite a neck/shoulder injury that has kept him off the field the last several days. FSU’s top defenders are raving about O’Leary’s on-field abilities; coaches are impressed with his ability to grasp Jimbo Fisher’s complex offense.
