Wellington Christian diving program is no more, girls soccer may be added

By Matt Porter

Wellington Christian has decided to fold its swimming and diving program, Athletic Director Matthew Winters said.

The program was started a year ago, mainly for talented diver Alexa Elkins, who finished third at states and was a first-team Post All-Area selection as a freshman. When she transferred to Wellington High after the school year, the program lost its only competitor.

“I am not in favor of just adding and dropping sports based on one person, but with diving an individual sport and with the student who had been at our school for years, we felt she would be here for the rest of her high school career and wanted to provide that opportunity for her,” Winters said.

Wellington Christian, which last year enrolled 111 students in grades 9-12 and graduated a senior class of 19, offers 10 varsity sports. Winters said the school is considering adding girls soccer to replace girls diving.
