West Boca Raton LB Jawand Blue receives six-week suspension for ejection

By Jeff Greer

West Boca Raton star linebacker Jawand Blue has received a six-week suspension for his ejection from Friday night’s game against Olympic Heights and will miss his team’s season opener Friday against Boca Raton.

Blue, who has verbally committed to Virginia Tech, was flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct and ejected for “throwing a punch,” documents from the Florida High School Athletic Association say. An unidentified player from Olympic Heights was also ejected for the same reasons and received a six-week suspension.

West Boca Raton Athletic Director Randy Kalman said he and the football staff were in the process of appealing the suspension. Coach Willie Dodaro was shocked by the harsh penalty for Blue, saying there were no punches thrown.

“We had a bunch of people on the sidelines at the game,” Kalman said. “No one saw a punch thrown … I’m working with (the FHSAA) now to get them all the information they need on our end.”

Schools are allowed to appeal any suspension handed down by the FHSAA. Olympic Heights coach Travis Johnson and Athletic Director Carla Blefary did not return messages seeking comment.
